Plastic welding rods PMMA - Polymethyl methacrylate
PMMA, also known as acrylic or acrylic glass, is a frequently apt everyday plastic. Use is PMMA, for example, as a light glass in automotive and motorcycle, as discs and covers, patio enclosures (double-skin sheets), spectacles, lenses and household items.
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic. It is prepared by emulsion or bulk polymerization. PMMA is plastically deformable at over 100°C, can be machined easily and is more scratch-resistant than other thermoplastics. Connections are possible by welding and gluing. It transmits light better than mineral glass, absorbs UV light, is resistant to weather and aging, and resistant to acids, alkaline solutions, petrol and oil. Ethanol, acetone and benzene attack PMMA, so acrylic surfaces may not be cleaned with alcohol or solvents. The melting point of PMMA is about 140°C to 160°C, the continuous use temperature is -40 to 90°C.
