Plastic Welding Instructions

Professional plastic welding with hot air device and welding iron
Goal:
With these instructions you will achieve a stable and durable repair of plastic components. The procedure is suitable for many thermoplastic materials such as PE, PP or ABS.

1. Preparation of the Damaged Area

1.1 Cleaning

Remove dirt, oil, grease and other contaminants completely. Only a clean surface allows a permanently strong welding connection.

1.2 Removing the Coating

For painted or coated components, the surface in the repair area must be exposed approx. 10 mm left and right of the damaged area.

1.3 Stopping the Crack

To prevent further cracking, drill a relief hole at both ends of the crack with approx. Ø 4 mm.

1.4 Preparing the Damaged Area

Mill or grind the damaged area into a V-shaped groove.
  • Groove shape: V-shaped
  • Width: adapted to the welding rod (approx. 3–5 mm)

2. Welding Process

2.1 Preparing the Device

  • Use the correct welding nozzle.
  • Set the temperature according to the plastic material.
  • Allow the device to reach full operating temperature.

2.2 Welding the Plastic

  • Start the welding process a few millimeters before the actual crack.
  • Insert the welding rod evenly and without excessive pressure.
  • Move the device along the seam at a constant speed.
  • Weld beyond the end of the crack.

  • even
  • closed
  • slightly raised for later processing

3. Reinforcement with Reinforcing Mesh (optional)

For heavily loaded plastic parts, an additional reinforcement mesh can be used.
  1. Remove approx. 1–2 mm of material in the repair area.
  2. Insert stainless steel reinforcement mesh.
  3. Completely melt the mesh into the plastic.
  4. Fill the area with welding rod.

4. Post-Processing

4.1 Cooling

Allow the weld seam to cool down completely. Do not use forced cooling with water or compressed air.

4.2 Surface Processing

The seam can then be processed using:
  • Router
  • Grinding disc
  • Sandpaper
The goal is an even and clean surface.

4.3 Fine Processing

Optional:
  • Apply plastic filler
  • Sanding
  • Painting

5. Work Safety

Warning!
  • Ensure sufficient ventilation.
  • Do not inhale welding fumes directly.
  • Risk of burns from hot equipment and plastic.
  • Use suitable protective equipment: gloves and safety glasses.

Important Note

The optimal welding parameters depend on the plastic material used. Temperature, speed and welding rod must always be adjusted to the material.
